A deadly officer-involved shooting overnight shut down a portion of Interstate 17 near downtown Phoenix.

Phoenix police say the incident began with a home invasion around 67th Avenue and Thomas Road around 1:30 a.m. Thursday. One home invasion suspect, identified as 21-year-old Penisimani Ika, was arrested at the scene and another fled in a vehicle.

The second suspect got into a vehicle and led police on a pursuit to the area of 7th Avenue and Broadway Road. Police were able to put stop sticks under the tires, but the suspect took off again toward the freeway.

The pursuit ended when the suspect crashed into a tree approaching the I-17 and I-10 interchange. He got out of the vehicle and started to run away.

Police said he turned around and pointed a gun at three officers chasing him. One, a sergeant, fired his weapon, hitting the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Robert Carrillo, 32.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The southbound I-17 to westbound I-10 ramp was closed for several hours for the investigation but reopened shortly after noon.

Investigators at the scene of the home invasion discovered "extensive" evidence of drug activity, according to a spokesman. Three people were detained at the scene in connection with that incident.

Ika faces three counts of armed robbery, three counts of kidnapping and one count of first-degree burglary charges.
