A Phoenix couple accused of child abuse in the death of their 4-year-old daughter in 2013 both have been sentenced to prison.
Maricopa County Superior Court officials say Melissa Centeno received an eight-year prison term Friday while her boyfriend Sergio Ortiz was sentenced to 10 years in prison and lifetime supervised probation.
The 22-year-old Centeno and 25-year-old Ortiz both recently pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse.
They originally were facing first-degree murder along with child abuse charges.
Police arrived at the couple's apartment on Oct. 13, 2013 and found Ortiz giving his daughter mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
Ortiz says he spanked the girl and the bruises were from her falling in the bathtub.
But authorities say the number and location of bruises on the child were inconsistent with Ortiz's story.
