Bad weather in parts of the country is affecting an already busy season for holiday travel with flights around the U.S. getting canceled or delayed. It's even affecting flights out of Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport.

Airport staff are suggesting that travelers arrive at the airport three hours before their scheduled departure.

Monday, more than 1,000 flights out of Chicago airports were canceled, causing a domino effect around the country.

“This has never happened to me before. So I don’t know what to do," said Paul Rich whose flight to Los Angeles was canceled.

Monday afternoon, the departures board for Southwest Airlines showed at least five cancelations and several delays--even to Los Angeles.

“They told me it’s the weather. It’s just this time of the year-- it’s really busy," said Nadia Addasi, whose flight to Los Angeles was delayed.

One woman said she's been trying to get home to the east coast since last night. She even had to get a hotel on her own dime and miss work today because her flight was delayed.

"So just trying to get home. It's been a pretty long day. I should've been home from 11 o'clock (EST) this morning," said Adrianne Morris.
