APS wants people to be aware of a new scam targeting their customers. APS says criminals are pretending to be APS employees and calling people to tell them that their service will be disconnected unless they pay an overdue bill.
APS says more than 50 customers have called them in the last two weeks to report the scam, and it’s very similar to one reported last fall.
The scammers are even using a ghost phone system that appears to be APS on the recipient’s caller ID.
People are given a toll-free number to call and pay the fake bills, and the number leads to people pretending to be APS employees as well.
Local law enforcement, the FBI and APS are working together to find the people responsible for the scam.
Anyone who is suspicious of a call or email is urged to call the APS Customer Care Center immediately at 602-371-7171.
