The Phoenix Police Department responded Thursday to a shoplifting incident that resulted in a clerk being bit.

Police say the suspect entered the 7-Eleven near 48th and Van Buren streets around 3 a.m. and placed multiple items in his pants.

As the suspect tried leaving the store without paying, the store clerk and a customer attempted to detain him until police arrived.

According to police, the struggle continued outside into the store parking lot when the suspect pulled out a knife, resulting in him cutting himself during the entanglement. The suspect also allegedly bit the clerk.

Once police arrived on scene they took the suspect into custody, where he was transferred to the hospital to be treated for his injuries, and then booked into jail.

Both the victim and the suspect sustained minor injuries and are expected to be fine.
