A serious collision involving a truck in Ahwatukee turned deadly on Saturday night.

According to officials, a Chevy Silverado crashed at 48th Street and Elliot Road after leaving the roadway for an unknown reason. The vehicle hit several trees in front of the Safeway parking lot.

Phoenix police said they are investigating the cause of the crash, but say evidence suggests Delair intentionally left the roadway.

The driver, 47-year-old David Delair, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness, Colin Haines, said that he and his wife found a dog that was ejected in the crash, so they handed the injured dog to a veterinarian who happened to be at the scene. The witnesses said they stayed at the scene of the crash with the driver while the veterinarian took the dog to get help.

Witnesses later told ABC15 that the dog also died from its injuries.
