An infant is hospitalized in extremely critical condition after being trapped underneath a capsized boat on Lake Havasu.

Deputies with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office were called to north Basin on Saturday afternoon after high winds and rough waters caused the boat to flip upside down near the shore.

The boat operator, Jose Ortega, told officials that they were trying to get to the Crazy Horse campground but the boat was taking large waves over the bow.

As a result, multiple people who were seated at the front of the boat were advised to move towards the back in attempt to keep the bow up, a media release said.

Once deputies arrived, they were told that that the baby was still trapped underneath the boat, a deputy spokesperson said. Rescue crews were able to flip the boat and pull the baby from the water.

According to authorities, CPR was performed on the child and she was taken to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Officials say the victim was wearing a life vest.

No other injuries were reported, and alcohol is not believed to have played a role.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
