APS completes work on Flagstaff peak

Posted
Crews have finished replacing power poles atop a mountain north of Flagstaff, mostly using helicopters to access the rugged terrain.

Arizona Public Service Co. wrapped up the work this month, switching out 24 wooden poles with 19 steel poles. The lines power communications equipment for law enforcement, firefighters and search-and-rescue crews.

The old power poles on Mount Elden in the San Francisco Peaks had been in place for four decades. The new rust-colored poles are expected to last as long.

The project required helicopters to deliver crews and equipment to the site over two months.
