Officials are investigating after a Border Patrol agent shot and killed a suspect near Yuma.

Border Patrol said an agent discharged his weapon after he was assaulted by a man who crossed illegally into the United States near Somerton, Arizona.

The incident happened around 10:00 p.m. on Thursday.

According to Border Patrol, “During the arrest, the subject grabbed the agent’s radio and collapsible steel baton and began striking him in the face and head while he also attempted to remove the Agent’s sidearm from its holster.”

The agent and suspect were transported to a Yuma hospital where the suspect was pronounced dead.

The agent sustained multiple bruises and lacerations to his head, which required stitches. He was also diagnosed with a concussion.
