University of Arizona police have stopped searching for a suspect near campus after discovering a gun he discarded was just a toy.

According to an alert sent out my police, the suspect was in the area of Tyndall to 2nd Ave. and 6th to 8th streets.

Police say a man who had been detained for questioning ran off and dropped a gun that turned out to be a toy on the ground. They called off the search for the man and cleared the area near the school.

Nearby Tucson High and Roskruge K-8 were on soft lockdown due to the search, Tucson Unified School District spokeswoman Stefanie Boe said. The lockdowns were shortly lifted.
