A Mexican woman has been rescued by authorities after being smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border and then locked in an ambulance storage compartment for nearly two days.

Police say the 26-year-old woman hired border smugglers last week to bring her into Arizona. The smugglers took her through an area of rough terrain west of Nogales before telling her to wait in a 4-foot long, 4-foot high ambulance compartment.

The woman was not able to open the compartment. She called her brother as temperatures began to rise, and he traveled 1,400 miles  to the countries' border to alert authorities.

The woman was found 40 hours after being locked in with little water and no food.

Authorities say she recovered fully at a nearby hospital and will be deported.
