A Mesa police officer was taken to the hospital Thursday morning, after his helicopter had a hard landing south of the Valley.

Rural Metro spokesman Shawn Gilleland said the aircraft landed in an open area near Felix and Arizona Farms roads.

The officer was the only person on board at the time, Gilleland said.

The extent of his injuries is unclear at this time.

The helicopter was forced to make an emergency landing due to engine failure, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration said.

The FAA said the helicopter sustained significant damage. Officials from the FAA will be investigating the incident.
