SCOTTSDALE, AZ — The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on so many non-profits in the community. Many have had to cancel fundraisers and shut down programs to help keep their communities safe.
Hunkapi Farms in Scottsdale is one of them. The therapy farm uses horses or equine therapy to help those dealing with different mental health issues. Many of their clients are special needs children from all over the state.
With donations down, the staff has had to think outside the box to keep the farm running, and all of their therapy horses well fed and taken care of. There are 25 horses on the property; all of them rescue animals.
Terra Schaad, founder of Hunkapi tells ABC15 it costs about $600 a month to feed, groom, and care for each horse.
Hunkapi farms is now selling clothing featuring messages of hope and positivity in their virtual clothing store. The clothing features the words "Open your heart" on them.
"It signifies that we can still stay connected, still think outside the box. We can still find ways to connect and touch people even remotely, so opening our hearts to people in this time of trial," said Schaad.
