Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is creating a temporary holding facility in response to a recent uptick in people attempting to enter the United States illegally.
CBP recently announced the facility, which is located at the Tornillo-Guadalupe Port of Entry in Tornillo, Texas.
According to a CBP press release, the building can hold up to 500 people for the next 30 days, which is dependent on the amount of people arriving at the ports or crossing the border in the area.
The facility will also be used as overflow support for the ports of entry and Border Patrol stations in the El Paso area. Once processing is complete, illegal immigrants will be transferred to ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations.
CBP said it's continuing to work with other federal and international agencies in an effort to discourage people from illegally entering the U.S. from Central America.
In the past few weeks, there's been a rise in illegal immigrants attempting to cross the border into Arizona — with the most incidents being reported in Yuma.
According to civilian watchdog groups, cartel members are encouraging people to cross the border before President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20.
