PHOTO: Officer comforts dying police horse

A photo of a Texas officer comforting his dying police horse has gone viral since it was posted on Facebook. 

The photo—which caught the nation's attention after it was posted by the Animal Justice League—shows the officer lying in the road with the horse, holding her in his arms.

According to the post, the horse ran into the road after being spooked by a loud noise and was hit by a truck. 

The officer laid in the street while the horse, named Charlotte, took her last breath, according to the post.

"We admire the heart & strength of this officer because as you know, when you lose an animal, to be with them during their last breath is a heartbreaking & tough thing to do," wrote the Animal Justice League. "Thank you to him for loving his partner & friend until the end. Our hearts go out to him & the HPD family."

As of Thursday, the post had more than 19,000 likes and 6,000 shares.
