Bobbi Kristina Brown died from lobar pneumonia, according to an autopsy report released today.
The report, released on what would have been Brown's 23rd birthday, said that the lobar pneumonia was due to her face being immersed “in water complicating mixed drug intoxication,” along with “Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy,” which is brain damage caused by a lack of oxygen.
"The underlying cause of death is the condition which starts the downhill course of events leading to death and in this case is the immersion associated with drug intoxication," the statement from the Fulton County Medical Examiner said. "The pneumonia and encephalopathy are more immediate causes which resulted from the immersion and drug intoxication."
The statement continues with, “marijuana, alcohol (ethanol), benzoylecgonine (a cocaine-related substance), benzodiazepines (medications used for sedation or to treat anxiety), and morphine” were found in her body. The autopsy added that, “It could not be determined from the toxicology tests whether the morphine resulted from heroin use."
The statement said Brown's death was not related to natural causes but the medical examiner "has not been able to determine whether death was due to intentional or accidental causes, and has therefore classified the manner of death as Undetermined."
Brown was the only child of the late Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown. She was found unresponsive in her bathtub inside her Atlanta-area home on Jan. 31, 2015. She later died on July 26, 2015, at the age of 22.
Houston eerily died in similar fashion at age 48. According to the Los Angeles County coroner's 42-page report, Houston died from accidental drowning after being found face-down in a bathtub inside the Beverly Hills Hotel on Feb. 11, 2012. Drugs were also found in her system at the time of her death.
Brown's autopsy was unsealed, despite an ongoing investigation, after media outlets argued that the report was a matter of public record.
Bobby Brown released his own statement to ABC News after the autopsy became public.
"First and foremost, 23 years ago today, Bobbi Kristina was born," his statement read. "Krissy will always live in my heart and soul. I love my baby girl. For news affiliates to seek and obtain my daughter's autopsy report, before anyone has been brought to justice for her death is mind blowing to me. Please pray for my family."
His lawyer Christopher Brown added in a statement, "Yesterday we were informed that two news affiliates were granted access to the autopsy of Bobbi Kristina Brown. While this action is unsettling, we will continue in our efforts in the civil lawsuit and the criminal investigation. Bobby Brown has had to be strong and mourn his loved ones in a fashion that is foreign to most people. So public, so raw, with apparently no end in sight. Hopefully public indictments and prosecution will lead to private healing and closure for Bobby Brown and his family."
Although no criminal charges have been filed, the estate of Bobbi Kristina Brown claimed in a lawsuit filed last September that her boyfriend at the time of her death, Nick Gordon, "gave Bobbi Kristina a toxic cocktail rendering her unconscious and then put her face down in a tub of cold water causing her to suffer brain damage."
According to paperwork obtained by ABC News at the time the suit was filed, Gordon's legal team, Joe Habachy and Jose Baez, called the lawsuit "slanderous and meritless."
