A teenage boy is dead after being struck by a train in Vail, an area just southeast of Tucson.

According to Ryan Inglett, a spokesperson for the Pima County Sheriff's Office, the 17-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl were struck on the train trestle around 2 p.m. Saturday.

The boy was pronounced dead on scene near Marsh Station Road and I-10. The girl was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to witnesses, the man and woman had been up on the bridge for about 30 to 45 minutes before the incident.

Train engineers did everything they could to stop the accident, officials said. It's not the first time that people have been killed by trains in the same area.

An investigation is ongoing and the victims' names haven't been released.
