PHOENIX — One man is dead after a shooting involving an Arizona Department of Public Safety trooper Tuesday afternoon.

Around 4:25 p.m., DPS officials say a motorcycle trooper spotted a Mercedes vehicle speeding around 90 miles per hour on Interstate 10 near 32nd Street and attempted to stop it.

The driver failed to yield, continued speeding, and exited at 24th Street. The driver continued traveling on 24th Street while going the wrong way.

DPS attempted a pit maneuver at Sky Harbor Boulevard but was unsuccessful. The driver kept going and got back on I-10 westbound.

The man continued until he got off at Jefferson Street where he turned north onto 22nd Street. That's when officials say the driver jumped out of the vehicle and a short foot-pursuit ensued.

The driver allegedly pulled out a gun, prompting the trooper to fire his weapon.

The driver was struck and taken to a hospital where he died. Officials say he was identified as 56-year-old Charles Robert Schwinn III from Glendale.

DPS officials say it's unclear if the bullet that struck him was from the trooper or his own gun.

The vehicle was later determined to be stolen and had a temporary paper license plate.

No troopers were injured.

An investigation remains underway.
