Whether you're going in for a hairstyle or to get your nails done, how do you know the place is on top of cleanliness and safety?

The Arizona Board of Cosmetology regulates aestheticians, hair stylists, nail technicians, and their businesses.

Want to check for a license or file a complaint? You can find that information easily enough on their website.

But finding out anything else will take a bit more work.

Right now, there is no way to easily look up salons to check inspection results, complaints or explanations of actions taken against them.

Instead, you'll have to dig, pay and wait.

Start by putting in a call to the Board (480) 784-4539. See if they will look up the particular person or salon that you have questions about.

You can also file a public record request with the Board. But it is an expensive process. Read more about that here.

A cheaper option is to ask the salon for the results of its last state inspection. The Board tells me it inspects businesses twice per year. Check the Board's monthly minutes to see if anything was found.

In the August 2018 minutes, we found dozens of violation accusations ranging from expired license to incompetence.

Regardless of what you find, if you have an unresolved problem filing a complaint will trigger an investigation and hopefully a resolution.

Find out more on how to do that here.
