Bumped from flight, baggage lost, airlines must pay

When you think of flying now, you probably think of that man being pulled off the plane, right?

Fortunately, it's not common.

But it should have most of us thinking about our rights if we are bumped from a flight.

We hear United is now asking people at check-in whether they would agree to be bumped if needed.

You would get a voucher for a future flight if that happens.

Great. But there is a concern.

It could also mean that by volunteering, you would not get the cash you could otherwise get by law.

If you're involuntarily bumped and have to take a later flight, you can get up to $675 if the delay is 1-2 hours.

It's $1350 if the delay is more than 2 hours.

You don't have to settle for less and it should be paid right there so you don't have to fight for it later.

If your checked luggage is lost, by law, you can get up to $3400 for the lost item.

It may be tough to get much UNLESS you have receipts for the bag and what's in it.

Pictures would also be a good idea.

I know, I know, it's not realistic, but the more proof the better.

By law, you even have to be reimbursed if your luggage is delayed for things like clothes or toiletries.

All of these things are included in an airlines Contract of Carriage.
