PHOENIX — Phoenix Fire Engine 24 was responding to a vehicle fire on I-10 at 59th Avenue when they were struck by a speeding vehicle, the Phoenix Fire Department says.

According to Captain Kenny Overton, the 23-year-old driver was driving at a "high rate of speed" when he hit the firetruck from behind.

The driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition, Overton said.

One firefighter was transported to an area hospital as a precautionary measure. The firefighter suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital Sunday night.

DPS will take over the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
