A Mesa man has been charged after he was shot by the homeowner of the house he set on fire.

Court records show that on March 30 around 1 a.m., a homeowner was wakened by a loud knock on the door of his home, near Dobson and Broadway roads.

The homeowner told police he went outside and saw his home on fire and a man, later identified as 19-year-old Rijon Marcus Sam, standing outside his home.

The armed homeowner was confronted by Sam who police say squirted the homeowner in the face with lighter fluid.

The court records say that the homeowner, a Vietnam veteran, fired several shots toward Sam, hitting him once in the arm.

Police followed the blood trail to a nearby mobile home. They found the lighter along the way and the can of lighter fluid at the bottom of the stairway near where Sam was found.

Sam was taken to Chandler Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his wounds.

Police said this case appears to be a random incident and that the suspect and homeowner do not know each other.

Sam is facing charges of arson, endangerment and aggravated assault.
