When police confronted the mother of a baby found alone outside an apartment, she responded by saying: "The child wanted to stay outside."

Court records show that on August 14 about 10 p.m., police were called to an apartment complex near 12th Avenue and Indian School Road by a neighbor who saw a baby left outside for about 45 minutes.

Police report that 25-year-old Antoinette Gail Little-Nashio went to her friend's apartment and began drinking. She later left the 1-year-old baby in a stroller -- dirty, soaked and without a diaper -- outside in the courtyard as she went inside the apartment and passed out in bed.

After a few minutes, the neighbor knocked on the apartment door, but no one answered, so the neighbor called the police.

When police arrived, they say they knocked on the apartment door for 10 minutes before the friend of Nashio came to the door. The friend told police that he knew nothing about the child. Nashio, at first, also denied knowing anything about the child, but later admitted the child was hers.

Police say Nashio told them that, "the child wanted to stay outside." Nashio gave no answer to police when they asked how the child communicated this request since he can't talk.

Police gave Nashio a breathalyzer test where she blew a .389.

Neighbors tell ABC15 the little baby boy was sweaty, and crying for help.

“It just hurt my heart,” said neighbor Mel Wright. “It made me sad.”

Neighbors came rushing in to help, calling 911, putting a diaper on the baby and trying to keep him cool.

“He was sweaty, his hair was all wet from being hot and his clothes were dirty,” said Wright.

“Anybody crazy could have come through here and snatched the baby up, and she still wouldn’t have known because that’s how gone she was,” said Wright.

“If I didn’t find him, somebody would have,” said neighbor Scott Dunn. “But it might have been too late.”

The friend who mom was drinking with did not want to go on camera, but told ABC15 that he had no idea there was a baby parked in a stroller outside his unit.

“I got her up and I said, ‘you have a baby,’” said the friend. “She kind of denied it to me too.”

The friend says after this incident, she will not be drinking at his place again.

The Department of Child Safety came out and took the baby. Nashio was taken to jail on a charge of child abuse.
