PHOENIX — A man who was reportedly trying to set fire to CVS employees with an aerosol can and a lighter was stopped by a CVS employee and citizen, according to court documents.

Phoenix police report that on December 7, a man later identified as William Nathaniel Hinton, 38, entered the CVS Pharmacy near Central Avenue and Jefferson Street carrying an aerosol can and lighter.

Police say he immediately approached the clerk and pressed the can over the lighter, causing the flame to propel toward the clerk. As the victim ran, Hinton reportedly chased after the victim before turning his attention to the store manager. Police say he then sprayed the flame in the direction of the store manager.

Court records show that the manager and a citizen tackled Hinton and detained him until police arrived.

Hinton reportedly told police that "he heard voices that caused his actions."

He has been charged with aggravated assault.
