Employees at a Valley McDonald's remained calm and relaxed as they help police capture a robber last week.

Police report that a McDonald's employee on Friday was standing outside the restaurant near 83rd Avenue and Indian School Road, when he allegedly overheard 18-year-old Juan Carlos Rivera say to another man that he was going to rob the restaurant.

Police say the employee went inside and herded the other employees into the freezer for protection while the restaurant manager contacted police.

Rivera then reportedly approached the counter, asking the employee where the safe was. When he was denied that information, Rivera allegedly showed the employee a handgun lodged in his waistband.

When police arrived, Rivera ran away, throwing the pistol to the ground as he ran from police. He was caught after a short foot chase.

He has been charged with attempted armed robbery and weapons misconduct.
