A Phoenix man says he was instructed by his deceased mother to take statues from a chapel.

Phoenix police report that on September 12, they arrested 30-year-old Miguel Angel Lopez outside a home chapel near 35th Avenue and Roosevelt Street.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Lopez jumped the fence, broke the gate, and stole several religious statues in a gated chapel in a small prayer area in the front yard.

After being detained by police, Lopez allegedly threatened the witnesses who assisted police. He also reportedly told police that the home once belonged to his mother who is now deceased.

He said her husband now lives in the home and she had called him recently instructing him to take the items.

Police say they found several of the statues in Lopez' car.

He has been charged with burglary.
