PHOENIX — An apartment security guard pepper sprayed an armed trespasser in Phoenix, according to police.

Phoenix police report that late Sunday night they responded to an apartment complex near 43rd Avenue and Indian School Road, after a security guard saw two strangers enter an apartment.

When police arrived, they heard screaming coming from the apartment. The security guard, who was watching the apartment until police arrived, reportedly saw William Jose Chavez, 28, leaving the apartment. He confronted and pepper-sprayed Chavez after Chavez rushed him, according to police.

The guard was then confronted by another man who allegedly pointed a gun at him. He shot pepper spray in his direction, causing the suspect to drop the gun and retreat into the apartment.

Police searched the apartment but did not find the second man. They did find a broken window in the back of the apartment. Police also say the weapon dropped by the suspect was a BB gun.

Chavez, sporting a half-shaved head, was found to have a partially smoked Oxycodone pill in his possession, according to court records.

He was arrested for drug possession, criminal damage, and criminal trespassing.
