PHOENIX — Charles Tack, the executive director of the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools, is stepping down from his position in the fall.

In the letter, dated Aug. 20, 2019, Tack said his resignation would be effective on Oct. 4, 2019.

"Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve the Board in this capacity -- it has truly been an honor. I look forward to working with you and the Board's outstanding staff to provide for a smooth transition that will ensure the Board's important work continues without interruption," Tack said in his letter.

The announcement comes nearly three months after Tack was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and driving the wrong way.

According to DPS, in May, Tack was traveling westbound on the Loop 202, west of Interstate 10, when he swerved into the eastbound lanes. DPS said Tack's vehicle struck a guardrail and sideswiped another vehicle. A witness reportedly followed Tack's vehicle onto the off-ramp, which was closed, and took his keys.

His BAC was reported to be 0.156, nearly two times the legal limit.

Earlier this week, Tack entered a not guilty plea in the case, according to records with the Maricopa County Superior Court. His next court date is scheduled for Oct. 1, 2019.
