Valley nonprofit CEO who worked to help black families, children dies

Mary M. Black, who founded and was the longtime CEO of the Black Family and Child Services of Arizona, died last week. She was 69.

Black started the organization in 1984 and spent more than 35 years leading it before she retired in October 2019.

Shawn Pearson, a 25-year nonprofit veteran, took over as CEO of the organization in January.

“Ms. Black’s pioneering work touched and improved the lives of thousands of children and families throughout the course of her amazing career,” Pearson said in a statement.
