Phoenix might not have as many franchises as you think.
According to a recent report by LendingTree, Phoenix ranked among the 10 cities across the country with the least amount of franchised businesses.
While Phoenix's percentage of franchises among all businesses is relatively small, the number of people in the Valley who work for franchises is a lot higher.
Phoenix seeing a lower number of franchises is part of a 15-year trend of more local restaurants opening and growing, said Kimber Lanning, the founder of Local First Arizona, a nonprofit that focuses on nurturing local Valley businesses.
