The Maricopa County Community College District and the National Junior College Athletic Association announced an adjusted plan for collegiate athletics this upcoming school year.

MCCCD already was considering canceling sports this upcoming year, but in response to NJCAA’s guidelines released earlier this week, the Valley’s community colleges will hold volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s and women’s soccer during the spring semester.

MCCCD athletics is where many local high school athletes start their college careers before transferring to larger university programs.

“We recognize the challenge to offer athletic programs in a manner that meets safety guidelines,” said Steven Gonzales, MCCCD interim chancellor, in a statement. “This decision was not made lightly, the well-being and safety of our community remain our number one driving force as we adjust to the effects of Covid-19.”
