Lumen Technologies will invest $2 million in fiber-optic infrastructure in rural and small communities in Arizona as part of a consent judgment finalized by the company and the state earlier this year.

The payments were announced Friday by Attorney General Mark Brnovich. Louisiana-based Lumen, formerly known as CenturyLink, will help to extend cellphone coverage and internet connectivity in rural and other underserved areas.

It is expected to benefit schools, public safety agencies, and small businesses as well as home customers.

Lumen, which sells telephone, internet, and television services in Arizona, has committed to making improvements in various locations.
