When it comes to the state of Arizona's highest paid employees, politicians rarely make the list.
Instead, the list of the top 25 highest-paid state workers features a healthy dose of physicians and health care professionals as well as those individuals who oversee the state's finances and investments — with a few department heads thrown into the mix.
Among them is Karl Polen, chief investment officer for the Arizona State Retirement System, who brings in more than $250,000 a year.
The 25 state employees in the ranking combined to make $5,750,982 in 2018, an average of $230,039.
