Housing development in Arizona's suburbs may be unsustainable due to a lack of water, according to a research report.

The study, from the Arizona State UniversityKyl Center for Water Policy, says development in areas such as Buckeye and Pinal County in the southeast Valley will have major challenges without new water supplies, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

The report also suggests the landmark 1980 Groundwater Management Act needs to be overhauled as housing development continues.

The challenge, according to the study, is that the areas don't have access to renewable water sources such as the Central Arizona Project, or CAP, and rely on groundwater.
