Google has been testing self-driving cars since 2009, and now they’re taking it to the next level with Waymo One. The self-driving ride service officially launched in Phoenix on Wednesday.
For now, the service is only available to a couple hundred riders, all of whom had already been participating in a pilot program that started last year. The robotic vehicles also include a human behind the wheel in case of malfunctions.
Waymo has a relatively good track record. Its cars have logged more than 10 million miles on public roads in 25 cities in Arizona, California, Georgia, Michigan, and Washington. They only have a few accidents on record, most of which were fender benders.
Waymo eventually plans to expand the new service to more riders and more cities.
