PHOENIX – The U.S. Postal Service has partnered with TuSimple, a self-driving truck company, to test autonomous mail trucks on a route between Phoenix and Dallas.

The whole trip is one-thousand miles and will require five round trips. Each truck, though self-driving, will have a “safety engineer.” This is someone who will be in the vehicle to monitor it and ensure the public’s safety.

Long distance deliveries can be dangerous for human drivers. This trip, in particular, is 22 hours long and according to TuSimple’s chief product officer Chuck Price, usually requires teams of drivers to accomplish.

Te hope is for these mail trucks to bring a whole new level of efficiency in a growing technological world.
