The Vegan Taste evolved from Chef Jason Wyrick's success in making significant changes in his health and a desire to help others do the same.
In 2001, Jason was suffering from the hallmark symptoms of diabetes, but he refused to believe it. "When I was diagnosed with diabetes, it was traumatic because I knew I had it, but I was in complete denial about it. I had failing eyesight. My joints hurt. My thinking was cloudy. I had all the symptoms but didn't want to admit it." After winding up in the emergency room with a life-threatening infection, the ER doctor dropped the health bomb that left Jason reeling. "He came back in the room yelling at me, saying, 'Why didn't you tell me you had diabetes?' He said, 'This is so bad, you'll need to be on medication for the rest of your life.' And I thought, 'Hell no!'" That's when he decided to switch to a healthy vegan diet.
After making this dietary switch, Jason discovered how painful a lifestyle change can be, even in the face of failing health. Fortunately, he succeeded in revamping his diet and learned a lot from the experience, namely that the easier you can make a lifestyle change for someone, the more likely they are to stick with it. The more pleasurable you can make a new lifestyle, the more likely they are to enjoy it! Thus, The Vegan Taste was born. The idea was to create ready-to-eat meals packed with flavor and nutrition with completely new dishes every week to keep clients delighted and engaged. The goal was to take the workload out of cooking and cleaning and create healthy meals that were so good; people would forget they were eating healthy.
At first, the meal delivery service was run as simply a side business for Chef Jason's other projects. Jason wrote books, taught in the Le Cordon Bleu program, published a magazine, led vegan food tours around the world, did food consulting, and ran one of Phoenix's top restaurants. However, upon seeing the vast difference his meals made in so many people's lives, The Vegan Taste meal delivery became his primary focus. He says, "We help so many with their health, the positive impact on the environment, and more compassionate food choices. It's a great business. I get to do something with a focus on myself (making and eating great food that keeps me healthy) while doing something altruistic by helping others do the same thing. Those opportunities are rare in life. How could I not do it?"
