SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A coffeehouse in Old Town Scottsdale is brewing more than coffee and shots of espresso.

JOJO Coffeehouse has coffee. It also has mimosa flights, beer flights, wine flights, and sangria at the bar, and a light, but hearty menu of breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, and Bruschetta. There is a fireplace, a large community table, and a pair of couches in front of an open-mic-style stage.

Owner Mike Melton, who quietly opened his coffeehouse in December, said he wanted to create a place that connected to the community.

"I wanted to create a coffeehouse environment because coffee is a product that brings people together and that really was, is something that is near and dear to me," he told ABC15. "Being able to break bread with your family and friends and be in a deep part of the community is something that really drives me as a person."

Guests will find 12 beer and coffee taps behind the bar, and three chalkboard menu boards listing the coffees, drinks, beer, wine and cocktails available. During the warmer months, two garage doors facing Scottsdale Road can open, and there are a handful of bar seats for people to sit and look out.

But, back to those flights. Here is what you can expect. Each flight has five samples, all displayed on a wooden board. The selections are written in chalk on the side.

Mimosa Flight:

  • Peach Mint
  • Cranberry Lime
  • Classic OJ
  • Apple Pie
  • Pineapple Mint

Coffee Flight:

  • Nitro cold brew
  • Latte
  • Cold brew
  • Caramel Macchiato
  • Espresso shop

Beer Flight:

  • Manzanita
  • Full Moon
  • Church Music
  • Barrio Blonde
  • Flagstaff IPA

Wine Flight:

  • Pino Grigio
  • Rose'
  • Pinot Noir
  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Sparkling Brut

Melton also wanted to try and define was a "coffeehouse" was vs. a "coffee shop."

"We realized that there was no true identity to what a coffeehouse is. A lot of people interchange coffee shop with coffee house. We really took it a little bit more literally. It's almost like a house environment. You've got a fireplace...you've got couches that face towards the stage...we've got a little nook area where you can do homework or have a meeting. But really it's a come-as-you-are type of place where everyone feels welcomed and wanted."

There is open-mic on Sunday mornings, and music performances throughout the week. JOJO will host a grand opening on Saturday, Jan. 26 all day with music events scheduled between 11 a.m. - 8 p.m.
