Scottsdale's Museum of the West has been named one of the best western art museums in the country.

The ranking was given by True West Magazine, which is based in Cave Creek, Arizona.

According to the online story, "...the blend of history and education programs is impressive, but you can't beat the vision. As director Mike Fox says, "We are not a museum of objects, but a museum of ideas.'"

There are over 500 works of art throughout the museum, including a gallery that depicts Lewis & Clark's historical expedition across the western United States, according to Rebecca Heller, the museum's communications and marketing manager.

Others on the list included Whitney Western Art Museum in Cody, Wyoming, Briscoe Western Art Museum in San Antonio Texas; and Tucson Museum of Art in Tucson, Arizona.

The 43,000-square-foot museum opened in January 2015.
