Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza is closing her restaurant, Barrio Urbano.
The James Beard multi-nominated chef made the announcement Tuesday in a public post on her personal Facebook page. It was later confirmed in a post on Barrio Urbano's Facebook page.
She said the Mexican eatery would close on Thursday. It's located at The Yard off 7th Street which has seen an influx of new restaurants in recent months.
Among reasons for the closing, she cited the cost of rent, lack of signage, location and her health, according to the Facebook post.
"Thank you to all of those who helped make Barrio Urbano a special place," she wrote.
Chef Esparza also runs Barrio Cafe Gran Reserva at 1301 W. Grand Avenue in Phoenix. In the fall, she plans to launch another concept, Nopalero, which will feature mostly plant-based Mexican-inspired dishes.
"Food is life. Food heals as much as it gives sustenance," she told ABC15 in a phone interview Tuesday evening.
