August restaurant openings: 13 new places to eat and drink around Phoenix

Over a dozen new eateries and cocktail joints opened up their doors for the first time around Phoenix last month.

So if you're looking for a new place to sip and snack, scroll below to learn about each new spot and plan your next night out.

MANCUSO’S

Mancuso's Restaurants have opened several restaurant concepts in the Valley over the years. In April, Bobby’s Restaurant in Scottsdale closed. It was relocated to downtown’s Collier Center under a new name – Mancuso’s. They serve fine Italian-American fare.  Read more here.

LA BOCCA URBAN KITCHEN & MODERN MARGARITA

When Coach & Willies closed in downtown Chandler, La Bocca and Modern Margarita decided to team up, share the kitchen and move into the space. Modern Margarita, as if its name doesn’t give it away, specializes in margaritas, and Mexican fare. La Bocca highlights a Mediterranean menu with locally-sourced ingredients where you will find salads, pizzas and handcrafted cocktails.

THE CASUAL PINT

The Casual Pint is a Tennessee-based beer market that has since grown and franchised. The Casual Pint - Ocotillo is the chain’s 13th location and first in Arizona. They’ll have a 30-tap wall to sell pints or fill growlers, which were told with change often. They’ll also have many other national and international brews available in bottles. If you’re hungry, they’ll serve typical bar food and snacks.

UNDERTOW

Undertow is a themed underground tiki-inspired cocktail bar located in an old auto oil bay. The space is tight – 500 square feet total – and has seats for 26 people. But, it does not feel like a bar. From the lighting to the music to the hand-carved bar, Undertow, is an experience. It’s designed to look like a clipper ship from the 19th century. They serve premium hand-crafted cocktails and will reportedly roll out a small bites menu in October.

TILT STUDIO ARCADE

Tilt Studio is an arcade that opened at Arizona Mills Mall. It has over 150 games, included a wall lined with 20 retro pinball machines. On the second level, they have a full-service kitchen and bar, which will serve burgers, chicken sandwiches and pizza.

TEASPRESSA & RUZE CAKE HOUSE

Looking for some espresso-infused tea and pastries? Head over to Scottsdale to try Teaspressa’s drinks and Ruze Cake House’s pastries. Allison DeVane, owner of Teaspressa, started her tea shop over a year ago, even going on ABC’s Shark Tank seeking a deal. Now, she’s partnered up with Ruze Cake House to open up their very first brick-and-mortar location. Read more about the shop here.

STELLA

Stella opened in the Camelback Corridor at the end of August. It features a “modern American cuisine with an Italian influence,” according to its website. You’ll find sandwiches, burgers, salads, pastas and pizzas on the menu. It is owned by Mark Drinkwater. The executive chef is Robert Eckhardy, who used to be at Drexyl. All of the items on the menu are made from scratch.

CHANDLER CUISINE AND WINE BISTRO

This is the second location for Fabrice and Mairead Buschtetz, owners of Cuisine and Wine Bistro. The menu features typical French cuisine with a few modern twists.

THE BAKED BEAR

The Baked Bear opened a second location along Tempe's Mill Avenue this summer. It opened its first Arizona location in Scottsdale earlier this year. It features build-your-own ice cream sandwiches. They have more than a dozen ice cream flavors and cookie combinations (brownies and donuts are also options), and ten toppings.

TILTED KILT PUB & EATERY

Last month, Tempe-based Tilted Kilt unveils a new look at its newest location in Tempe. The 11,000-square-foot pub was designed to be brighter and offer more entertainment for guests. They've added new seating, TVs, a stage for live music, and a behind-the-scenes camera of food being prepared. Tilted Kilt said the Tempe design will be used in new restaurants being built.

THE GORILLA CHEESE TRUCK

The people behind the QUPBBQ Food Truck have brought another truck to the Valley. The Gorilla Cheese Truck hit the road at the end of August with a cheese-filled menu. The menu has six different cheese items, including sandwiches and loaded tots.
