OHIO — Just when it seemed like millennials finally killed-off handwriting, cursive is making a comeback!
The Ohio Legislature recently passed House Bill 58, which provides Ohio schools with the materials and resources needed to teach students how to legibly write in cursive.
Language in the bill states “The instructional materials shall be designed to enable students to print letters and words legibly by grade three and create readable documents using legible cursive handwriting by the end of grade five."
The bill initially contained language mandating schools to teach students cursive; however, an updated version of the bill allows individual school districts to choose whether they’d like to add cursive to the curriculum.
The Ohio Department of Education will develop the new curriculum, which is expected to take effect July 1, 2019.
