LAREDO, TEXAS — Agents from the Laredo West Border Patrol discovered a semi-trailer full of 120 people attempting to enter the United States illegally.
According to a press release on Customs and Border Protection's website, agents were working checkpoint operations on May 10 around 12:15 a.m. when they came upon a black semi-truck with a white trailer.
The driver of the semi-truck claimed he did not have identification while being interviewed by CBP agents.
As they were speaking with the driver, a canine alerted agents to the odor of concealed humans and/or narcotics inside the trailer.
Agents referred the driver to a second checkpoint when the driver jumped out of the passenger's side door and ran into a nearby field, the press release states.
CBP agents proceeded to open the trailer, where they found 120 people inside, including 11 children.
"Fortunately for all individuals found inside the trailer, the weather was unseasonably cool and conditions inside the trailer were bearable," CBP's press release noted. "Nonetheless, it would have been impossible for the people to escape the trailer as it could not be opened from the inside."
The migrants came from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador and Mexico, CBP says.
It is unclear if the driver was apprehended.
