You surely know him best as the guy who wore a Speedo in the Curtain of Distraction during an ASU basketball game. But believe it or not, Michael Phelps is perhaps best known as a highly skilled swimmer who has won a record 23 Olympic gold medals.
It's for that reason that Phelps, whose coach is Arizona State swim and dive coach Bob Bowman, is set to race a great white shark as part of Discovery Channel's "Shark Week" next month.
"Phelps vs. Shark: The Battle for Ocean Supremacy" will air Friday, July 23 at 5 p.m. Arizona time on the Discovery Channel. Yes, this is a real thing, and here's the trailer to prove it:
It should be noted that the great white shark's top speed is about 25 miles per hour, while Phelps' top speed is about 6 MPH. Perhaps the gold medalist will use his "Curtain" experience to distract the shark long enough to gain an advantage.
