Apps that help you find the best prices on prescription medications

Prescription medications can really make your paycheck seem small especially if you don't have health insurance.

Our ABC15 Smart Shopper team found a few apps that will show you the best place to get the best price.

Amoxicillin, Lipitor and Clonidine were compared. For help, I used GoodRX and WE RX.

Both have sites and apps, and both found Amoxicillin for just $4 at Walmart.

For Lipitor, you'll pay more than $300 for 30 tablets so we looked at the generic version. Both sites found the best price at Fry's. When we called Fry's, we were quoted $11.59.

But GoodRX has a coupon that should bring the price down to $11.01. WE RX also has a coupon but their quoted price is $11.67, which is a few cents more than the regular cost that Fry’s offers.

Finally, Clonidine will cost you $4 at Walmart according to WE RX. But when we called Walmart, they had a different price of $10. That's a pretty big difference. That's the same price that GoodRX says we should expect to pay at Walmart.

Overall, both sites were very helpful in giving us a place to start.

Of the prescriptions we compared, GoodRX seemed to be more accurate when it came to prices, but both sites did most of the hard work.

When we called the actual pharmacies they said they won't give you the discounted price unless you ask, so don't forget to simply ask for their best price, and ask where they suggest you find coupons.

LowestMed.com is another site and app with coupons and comparisons.
