November is Diabetes Month: Diabetes and Healthy Vision
All month long, Nationwide Vision is bringing awareness to a condition that can seriously affect your vision: diabetes.
While it's well known that diabetes can increase your chance of heart attacks, kidney damage, and cancer, many aren't aware that diabetes can also have severe consequences for your eyesight.
And because November is diabetes month, Nationwide Vision has created a list of three of the most common eye problems brought on by diabetes complications:
1.    Blurred vision: When a person's blood sugar level gets too high, it can cause the lens to expand, causing blurred and impaired vision. While this is perhaps the least serious of diabetes-related eyesight problems, it is still one that needs to be addressed immediately so as not to cause any permanent damage.
2.    Cataracts: Though we've talked about cataracts[nationwidevision.com]  and treatment options[nationwidevision.com] before, this time, we'll be focusing on the relationship between cataracts and diabetes. Cataracts[nationwidevision.com]   (or a clouding of the lens which could lead to impaired vision) tend to happen even more frequently in people with diabetes and often with greater severity. In many expedited cases, surgery is necessary.
3.    Diabetic Retinopathy: Perhaps the most serious vision impairment brought on by diabetes is diabetic retinopathy, a condition which occurs when the blood vessels of the retina are severely damaged (due, again, to high blood sugar). If left untreated, diabetic retinopathy can cause irreversible blindness.
Though there are a number of vision complications that can arise due to diabetes and high blood sugar, by incorporating a balanced diet, healthy living, and frequent eye exams into your routine, many (if not all) of these complications can be prevented or properly treated.
