Incumbent U.S. Sen. John McCain may be running for a sixth term this November, but a new statewide poll shows him with a less than stellar approval rating among surveyed voters.

According to North Carolina-based Public Policy Polling, 52 percent of those surveyed disapprove of the senior senator, with 34 percent supporting him and 14 percent not sure.

As for the Senate race, those surveyed still pit McCain ahead of Democrat Ann Kirkpatrick, 42 percent to 36 percent, head-to-head.

If fellow Republican challenger Kelli Ward made it on the November ballot, 37 percent of voters would choose her narrowly over Kirkpatrick, with 35 percent support.

The poll surveyed 896 registered Arizona voters either by telephone or an internet panel between May 13 and May 15. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.

The Senate primary is scheduled for Aug. 30.
