Two people have been arrested for leaving a 14-year-old boy alone in a Surprise hotel room with meth and other drug paraphernalia.

Court records show a maid was cleaning a room at the Days Inn near Bell and El Mirage roads on Wednesday when she noticed a clear plastic bag with a clear crystal substance inside. It was spotted on a nightstand next to a bed along with a straw according to the documents.

Police say the cleaner left the room and called police. Police identified 45-year-old Karen Belzner later that day as the legal guardian of the teen, after she and another man arrived back at the hotel room.

Records show a used glass pipe was also found in the room.

Belzner and the other man, Scott Shields, were both arrested for child abuse and criminal negligence for putting the teen’s health at risk. Belzner allegedly told police that the items belonged to Shields. She said she knew he had the items and that she also knew that he uses meth.

DCS was contacted and took custody of the teen.

Shields’ mug shot was not immediately available.
