The Tempe Police Department says they used crucial tips from witnesses to search a nationwide license plate reader database to track down a suspect in a road rage shooting.
Court documents released Tuesday, show police tracked down Holly Davis at a Mesa apartment because a license plate matching the one given by witnesses was recorded at that location by a license plate recognition camera or LPR, for short.
Documents show Davis’ car was not at the location when police went searching for her.
Prosecutors says she ditched her car a couple of blocks away in an attempt to cover her tracks.
"She drove a couple of blocks away from her house, left her car, backed up into a parking spot at another apartment in an attempt to avoid being caught, she backed it up so no one would see her license plate,” said a Maricopa County Attorney during Davis’ initial appearance.
Davis gave no explanation of what happened during her appearance before a judge.
However, documents revealed she told investigators she was depressed and wanted to die.
Davis is accused of shooting and killing a Chinese national student, Yue Jiang, who was studying at ASU.
Police say Davis got into a minor fender bender with Jiang and pulled out a gun and shot her on Saturday near Broadway and McClintock
A judge set Davis’ bond at $1.5 million.
She is scheduled back in court January 27
