Police have arrested a man after stealing a city bus and taking it on a short ride.
Officers said an Orbit bus was reported stolen around 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Country Club Way and Southern Avenue. Two people, both teenagers, were on the bus at the time.
Police found the bus in the 3200 block of Country Club, but the suspect had ran away. The passengers were not hurt and were let off the bus by the suspect.
They told investigators the person who stole the bus only drove it for a short distance before abandoning it. Tempe police said the suspect drove for about five minutes.
Authorities searched the area and found the suspect, later identified as 53-year-old Samuel Chayrez, near Golf Avenue and Fairway Drive.
Chayrez committed motor vehicle theft, kidnapping and endangerment.
